SpaceX Equity Slips Below $135 IPO Price Amid Capital-Intensive AI Infrastructure Pivot

SpaceX shares dipped below their $135 initial public offering price for the first time, erasing early gains from its historic $86 billion listing. The market correction occurs as the company aggressively expands its capital expenditure on orbital solar-powered data centers, terrestrial compute facilities, and large-scale AI acquisitions.

IPO Capitalization and Market Liquidation

SpaceX equity fell below its initial public offering price of $135 for the first time during Wednesday morning trading, bottoming out before closing slightly up at $135.27. The descent marks a correction from the post-IPO peak, which saw shares gain over 50% in the days immediately following its June 2026 listing. The historic flotation raised $75 billion initially, with underwriters exercising overallotment options to sell an additional $11 billion, bringing the total raised to $86 billion.

This transaction established SpaceX’s initial market capitalization at $2.2 trillion. On July 7, the stock was integrated into the Nasdaq-100 index under a fast-track rule change permitting inclusion 15 days post-listing.

Infrastructure Integration and AI Compute Strategy

The high valuation and initial investor appetite were heavily tied to SpaceX's pivot toward high-performance computing infrastructure. The company's long-term technology road map includes deploying solar-powered orbital data centers designed to perform edge-computed AI processing directly in orbit.

This orbital strategy is supported by major capital allocation in terrestrial software and hardware systems. Earlier in 2026, SpaceX completed a merger with xAI. The combined entity has built two terrestrial data centers and currently leases raw compute capacity to external AI providers, specifically Anthropic and Google.

To automate software development within its launch, satellite, and computing ecosystem, SpaceX announced a $60 billion acquisition of the autonomous AI coding startup Cursor, which is scheduled to close in the third quarter of 2026. Cursor's engine allows developers to write autonomous, agentic coding tasks using natural language prompts.

Liquidity Headwinds and Lock-Up Expirations

Despite SpaceX's dominance in orbital launches via its Falcon 9 architecture and global broadband delivery via Starlink, investors have expressed escalating concern regarding the company’s capital expenditure trajectory and overall debt load.

Liquidity pressure on the stock is expected to increase over the coming months due to structured employee lock-up expirations. Upon the disclosure of the company's second-quarter financial results, at least 20% of outstanding shares held by current and former employees will be eligible for secondary market liquidation. The remaining lock-ups are set to expire completely in December 2026.

Historically, early-stage volatility of this scale is not unprecedented for megacap tech offerings. Following its May 2012 IPO at $38, Meta experienced a valuation drop of approximately 50%, bottoming out at $19.69 in August 2012 before recovering to its IPO price 14 months later in July 2013.
